Painting Oman Into Modernity
Anwar Sonya (b. 1948) is a renowned Omani contemporary artist, often referred to as the “Godfather of Modern Art” in Oman. As an active figure within the Omani Art Movement, he contributed to the growing visibility of Omani art beyond the Sultanate. He was one of the founders of the pioneering government art institution, the Youth Art Studio, established in 1980, which stood as a professional space for young artists to develop their artistic talents. In 1993, he joined the Oman Society for Fine Arts, an important incubator for Omani art that aimed to preserve the country’s cultural identity and promote it internationally. He also participated in the annual art exhibition The Circle, which showcased multimedia and installation works staged in Muscat.

His work incorporates Arabic calligraphy and symbols that capture Omani identity, often illustrating landscapes, forts, castles, and scenes rooted in local culture. He depicts traditional dance through visually appealing elements such as clothing, movement, and vivid colour, while ensuring a dynamic chromatic harmony that immerses the viewer in the painting. With every piece, Anwar Sonya seeks to achieve a balance between visual harmony and spiritual expression.

Over the years, Sonya accumulated multiple awards and was officially recognized for his services to Omani art. He was awarded the Golden Prize by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos as best artist, and was named The Most Distinguished Arab Artist by the Sharjah International Biennial.
